In May 2024, a rare geomagnetic storm caused by massive solar flares made the Northern Lights visible from Long Island. The intensity of this storm disrupted Earth’s magnetic field significantly, allowing auroras to be seen much further south than usual, even reaching areas like Florida.
What is a geometric storm?
A geometric storm, alternatively referred to as a solar storm, arises as a temporary disruption within the Earth’s magnetosphere caused by a solar wind shock wave.
Why does this cause the northern lights to travel south?
Solar storms can make the Northern Lights go south because the storm disrupts the Earth’s magnetic field, making charged particles glow. These particles come from the sun’s surface where large magnetic bursts shoot material into space. When this material hits Earth’s magnetic field, it lights up.
Where were the best viewing spots in Long Island?
The best viewing times were between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday, depending on the forecast. The viewing spots in Long Island were not great, but from personal family experience my cousin got a great view in Farmingdale. The best place to be was the Catskills overall
