The upcoming superhero blockbuster film Captain Marvel will be the twenty first installment in the ongoing series of interconnected films created by Marvel Studios. The film is set to release on March 8th, 2019, yet some “reviews” of the film have already surfaced on popular movie-critic site, Rotten Tomatoes. These “reviews” are not really reviews at all. Following backlash from many fans of the franchise due to lackluster trailers, expectations for the first female-led Marvel superhero film are at an all time low according to the Audience Score on the site. This feature is a way for casual movie viewers to express their interest in an upcoming movie. However, many people assumed that these were real reviews from people who had already seen the film, which led many people to think the film was not worth watching at all.
Since the audience score hit under 30%, the lowest ever for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Rotten Tomatoes has edited their site to stop things like this from happening again. The format of the site changed drastically after this event, with the banning of reviews of any kind before a movie is officially released. This change is in effect right now, with Rotten Tomatoes commenting on the incident saying the changes were due to an “uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling, which we believe is a disservice to our general readership.”
