A bill attempting to ban TikTok is making its way through Congress. If passed, it will then head to the President’s desk.
This bill, if put into effect, would give Tik Tok six months to sell the Chinese owned company, Byte dance, portion of the company. Byte Dance owns 20% of Tik Tok.
The senate however, has said they will be taking more time with it. If passed in the senate, it will go to Joe Biden’s desk, where he says he will sign it into law.If passed it is expected to start the six month timer in September, just two months before the presidential election.
Advocates for the bill argue that China is taking American Tik Tok users’ information.
Opposers of the bill counter that this will take jobs away from millions of Americans who depend on Tik Tok for money.
Village social studies teacher, Lisa Holz, said that, “it is a learning experience, and a teachable moment for me, because right now in Government we’re discussing how a bill becomes a law so we are able to tap into the students interest of Tik Tok and seeing if the process of the bill becoming a law, and eventually a ban is going to impact their life. Personally, I like watching Tik Tok for my makeup reviews and my gossip, and my conspiracy theories, and also recommendations for documentaries, but I guess I’m just going to have to go to the bootleg version of Reels if Tik Tok does get banned.”
