This past Sunday was Easter; it was also International Transgender Day of Visibility. President Biden publicly acknowledged both days, which left many conservatives furious.
International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) has been on March 31 since its creation in 2009. It was founded by transgender activist and psychotherapist Rachel Crandall. This was a response to many things including a lack of recognition for the success of trans people. It was also in reaction to the fact that the only other well known transgender-centered day of recognition was the Transgender Day of Remembrance. TDOV is a day of celebration and recognition of what transgender people have to endure and how they rise above.
President Biden issued the first ever presidential proclamation that recognized Transgender Day of Visibility in 2021 and has issued a proclamation every year since.
In summary, TDOV has been on March 31st since 2009 and officially recognized since 2021. The Royal Museums Greenwich says the date of Easter is, “the first Sunday after the full Moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox.”
Thusly, Easter and TDOV coinciding is no more than a coincidence.
And yet, many seemed confused by this occurrence. Former president Donald Trump’s campaign said, “It is appalling and insulting that Joe Biden’s White House … formally proclaimed Easter Sunday as Trans Day of Visibility,”.
Other politicians and Republicans declared the coincidence as attack on Easter and Christian faith. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that, “The Biden White House has betrayed the central tenet of Easter.” He also said, “Biden proclaimed Easter Sunday as Transgender Day.”
Many people followed this lead taking to Biden’s comments after a post in recognition of TDOV saying things like:
- “ITS EASTER NOT TRANS DAY!! STOP TRYING TO CHANGE STUFF”
- “Will never let this take over Easter”
- “Happy Easter, we ain’t celebrating no trans day”
- “Should’ve picked April 1st april fools day. just like this joke of an administration”
- “I dislike this, stop making delusional days”
- “Support satan on Easter is blasphemous”
This was a few of thousands of other comments supporting the same theme.
